Coffee, Decoded · The Panera coffee program

Panera Coffee: Prices, Caffeine & the Sip Club Math (2026)

The coffee has more caffeine than the latte. The subscription pays for itself in five visits. Here is the whole program, decoded. Panera Bread is the US bakery-cafe chain behind the coffee program. This page decodes the program: the lineup, the caffeine math, and the Sip Club. For every Panera drink ranked by caffeine, see our drinks guide. Coffee lives in the drinks corner of the full Panera lineup, next to the food it usually travels with.

Our drinks page ranks all 66 Panera drinks by caffeine. This page is narrower and more useful if coffee is your order: the drip lineup, the espresso bar, the decaf, and the one subscription decision that decides whether any of it is cheap or expensive for you. Every price and caffeine figure below comes from the checked menu numbers unless it is labeled typical.

189 mg in a plain dark roast, more than a latte 5 coffees a month to break even on Sip Club Lattes excluded from Sip Club (typical)

How to read the labels: coffee prices and caffeine are verified from Panera’s official Nutrition Guide dated September 2, 2026, with 9-city average prices checked September 30, 2026. Sip Club price and terms are typical because Panera sells the membership in its app and can change it: confirm the current terms before you subscribe.

The caffeine surprise

Plain coffee beats the latte

Most people assume the espresso drink is the strong one and the drip coffee is the mild default. At Panera the numbers run the other way, and the reason is simple: a latte is mostly milk. A Caffe Latte is an espresso drink cut with steamed milk. Because it is mostly milk, it carries 126mg of caffeine: less than a plain drip coffee at 189mg. If you are buying the buzz, skip the milk.

The winner · Drip coffee

Cafe Blend Dark Roast

189 mg caffeine

$3.01 · 5 calories. Light roast and hazelnut drip match it at 189 mg. This is the most caffeine you can get from an actual coffee at Panera, and it costs the least to drink black.

The espresso bar · Milk drink

Caffe Latte

126 mg caffeine

$4.74 · 130 calories. The espresso shot itself carries the caffeine; the steamed milk that makes a latte a latte adds calories and cost without adding any lift.

The decision: if you want the buzz, skip the milk. A latte is a flavor and comfort order, and a good one. Just do not pay latte prices expecting latte strength. Order the drip when caffeine is the job, and the latte when the drink itself is the point.

Scale: the FDA’s commonly cited 400 mg daily caffeine reference for healthy adults. Two large drip coffees nearly fill it before any tea, soda, or chocolate. General information only, not medical advice: your own limit may be lower.

The lineup

Five ways Panera sells coffee

The whole coffee program fits on five cards. Each one carries its price band, its caffeine, and the only question that matters: is it in the Sip Club or not.

Panera’s coffee program has two halves. Drip and iced coffee are self-serve and included in the Sip Club. Espresso-bar drinks are made to order and are not included.

1 · The workhorse

Drip coffee

$3.01 to $3.15 per cup
189 mg caffeine5 cal

Light roast, dark roast, and hazelnut, all at 189 mg and 5 calories. The dark roast at $3.01 is the verified anchor price. This is the default order for a reason: maximum lift, minimum cost, nothing to customize.

In Sip Club

Order it when: caffeine is the job. This is the coffee the Sip Club math below is built on.

2 · The cold default

Iced coffee

$3.59 per cup
92 mg caffeine5 cal black

A solid cold lift, though under half the drip’s 189 mg. The flavored iced coffees (hazelnut mocha, pumpkin spice, rocky road styles) add sugar and calories, so the plain iced coffee is the clean version of this order.

In Sip Club

Order it when: it is the afternoon and a hot cup is the last thing you want.

3 · The strong, smooth one

Cold brew

Check app price varies
Steeped, smoother taste

Cold brew is the slow-steeped option: smoother and less acidic than iced coffee, and positioned as the stronger cold drink. Panera does not put a stable price in our checked menu numbers, so check the app price and caffeine for your cafe and size before ordering.

Not in Sip Club

Order it when: you want cold coffee with the bite taken out, and you are paying per cup anyway.

4 · The flavor bar

Espresso bar

$4.74 to $5.24 lattes
126 mg caffeine130 to 380 cal

Lattes, cappuccinos, and flavored espresso drinks. You are paying for milk, foam, and flavor, not strength: every one of them sits at 126 mg, well under a drip. An Americano is the bridge order, espresso cut with hot water.

Not in Sip Club

Order it when: the drink is the treat. Never subscribe to Sip Club for these: they are excluded.

5 · The evening option

Decaf

~$3.01 per cup
Trace caffeine0 cal

Drip decaf at the same counter and the same price band as the regular drip. It keeps the ritual and the warmth and drops the caffeine to a trace, so it will not follow you to bed.

Drip counter

Order it when: it is after dinner and coffee still sounds good. Hot tea is the other evening lane.

The short version

How to choose in one line

Drip for lift, iced for afternoons, cold brew for smooth and strong, espresso for flavor, decaf for evenings.

Two of the five (drip and iced) are in the Sip Club. That split is the whole subscription decision, and it is the next section.

The Sip Club math

Is the subscription worth it?

The Unlimited Sip Club is reported at $14.99 or more per month. For that, reports describe unlimited hot drip coffee, iced coffee, hot and iced tea, and fountain drinks, one every two hours. Two exclusions decide everything, and they are the two drinks people most often assume are covered.

  • Included (typical): drip coffee (light, dark, hazelnut, decaf), iced coffee, teas, and fountain drinks, one every 2 hours.
  • Excluded (typical): cold brew and the entire espresso bar. No lattes, no cappuccinos, no Americanos.
The break-even, at a drip price of about $3.15: $14.99 ÷ $3.15 ≈ 5 coffees a month Drink a sixth coffee and the subscription is ahead. Drink four and paying per cup was cheaper. Everything else is commentary.

Run your own number

Slide to how many drip or iced coffees you actually buy in a month. The math uses $3.15 per cup against the reported $14.99 Sip Club price.

Paying per cup$25.20
Sip Club (typical)$14.99
DifferenceSave $10.21

Worth it at this pace. Eight coffees is roughly twice a week, comfortably past the five-coffee break-even.

Calculator uses the reported $14.99 price and a $3.15 drip cup for illustration. Your cafe price and the current app terms govern the real decision.

The verdict · Subscribe

Worth it at twice a week

If a Panera sits on your commute or near your office and your order is drip, iced coffee, or tea, twice a week puts you at eight or nine drinks a month, nearly double the break-even. At that pace the reported $14.99 replaces roughly $27 of per-cup spending.

The verdict · Skip it

Skip it if you drink lattes

The espresso bar is excluded (typical), and so is cold brew. If your usual order comes from either, the subscription covers drinks you do not buy while your actual order stays full price. Pay per cup, or switch your daily order to drip and let the calculator above decide.

What to order when

The right coffee for the moment

Four moments cover almost every coffee order at Panera. Match the moment first and the specific drink is obvious.

Morning rush

You need to be awake, fast

Dark roast, black

The strongest actual coffee on the menu and the fastest order at the counter. Nothing to wait for, nothing to sweeten, nothing to regret at 189 mg.

$3.01 · 189 mg · 5 cal

Slow morning

The coffee is the occasion

Caffe Latte

You are sitting down, not commuting. The latte’s 126 mg is enough for a gentle start, and the milk and foam are the point of the order, not a flaw in it.

$4.74 · 126 mg · 130 cal

Afternoon slump

A second wind, cold

Iced coffee

Less than the morning drip’s caffeine, but cold at 3 p.m. Keep it plain and it stays at coffee calories; the flavored iced coffees turn it into dessert.

$3.59 · 92 mg · 5 cal black

Evening

The ritual, not the caffeine

Decaf, or hot tea

Decaf keeps the coffee taste with trace caffeine. If you want a small lift that fades by bedtime instead, hot tea is the lighter lane. Either way, the 189 mg drip stays a morning drink.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 189 mg in a standard Cafe Blend Dark Roast Coffee, with just 5 calories. That figure is taken from Panera’s official Nutrition Guide dated September 2, 2026, and it is the joint-highest caffeine of any Panera coffee, tied with the light roast and hazelnut drip coffees. Two of them reach 378 mg, close to the FDA’s 400 mg daily reference for healthy adults.

  • Among coffees, the drip roasts lead at 189 mg: dark roast, light roast, and hazelnut. The single most caffeinated drink at Panera overall is the Rocky Road Frozen Java at 221 mg, which is a frozen dessert drink rather than a coffee. The full caffeine ranking places every drink, coffee included, in one list.

  • At about $3.15 per drip coffee, the reported $14.99 monthly price breaks even at roughly five coffees a month. If you pass a Panera twice a week and drink drip, iced coffee, tea, or fountain drinks, it is usually worth it. If your usual order is a latte or cold brew, it is not, because espresso drinks and cold brew are excluded typical. Run your own pace through the calculator above.

  • No (typical). Sip Club covers hot drip coffee, iced coffee, hot and iced tea, and fountain drinks, one every two hours. It excludes espresso bar drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos, and it also excludes cold brew. Confirm the current eligible list in the Panera app before subscribing, because membership terms can change.

  • Yes. Panera serves a drip decaf coffee at the same roughly $3.01 drip price point, with trace caffeine and no meaningful calories. It is the evening option in the coffee lineup: the coffee ritual without the caffeine that keeps you up.

  • Yes, through coffee totes for groups. A tote holds about ten servings, and the working rule is one tote per eight to ten coffee drinkers. Prices and serving counts for totes are labeled typically, so confirm at your cafe. The breakfast catering playbook works through the full group coffee math, including how far ahead to order.
